Matthew 5:31-32

Feb 8, 2026    Pastor Joseph Hearn

Before Jesus confronts divorce, He confronts our understanding of marriage. In Matthew 5:31–32, Jesus is not issuing a cold command—He is guarding a sacred picture. This message takes us back to God’s heart for marriage through the story of Hosea, where marriage is revealed as a living illustration of God’s covenant love for His unfaithful people. From the pursuit of a wandering bride to the cost of redemption, we see that marriage was never just about two people—it was meant to display the faithful, pursuing, redeeming love of Christ for His church. When that picture is broken, the gospel itself is distorted. This sermon lays the foundation for understanding why Jesus speaks so seriously about divorce—because marriage tells God’s story.
